Action for Justice and Peace.
Open Gate

Open Gate is a registered charity providing mentoring / befriending support to women offenders leaving HM Prison & YOI Low Newton, Durham, and who are returning to the North East of England.

The project aims to aid resettlement and help reduce the risks of re-offending, so building safer communities for all.

Our trained female volunteers can support the women through:
· Providing positive one to one support
  and offering a listening ear
· Being non-judgemental
· Offering practical help with problems
· Helping access services ie. GP, library,
  benefits etc.
· Helping access education and job
  opportunities
· Providing transport and accompany to
  appointments and meetings

Michael McHugh is the development worker for the Asylum Seekers and Refugees Project (ASRP).  He explores and develops new project provision e.g. Recently setting up a new drop-in centre for asylum seekers and refugees in Walker, Newcastle.  The 7 project drop-ins within the diocese offer a friendly welcome, refreshments, recreational games, practice in conversational English, advice and support from visiting agencies and social events.  Michael recruits, trains and supports the teams of volunteers from parishes and elsewhere who run the drop-ins in church premises.  He maintains links with the volunteers through visits, e-mails, phone and post and organizes regular meetings of a volunteers' forum.  He also takes volunteers through Diocesan and Criminal Records Bureau checks to safeguard against the possibility of abuse of project users.

Michael runs asylum awareness raising sessions for schools and groups using power-point presentations, films, talks and discussions.  Asylum seeker and refugee issues and ASRP's work are publicised through articles for Justice and Peace, the Northern Cross, posters and representation at events.  Some 1-to-1 support is provided for asylum-seeking individuals and families.  Michael helps collect food donated by parishes for destitute asylum seekers.  He responds to requests for information, advice, sign-posting and problems.  Liaison with relevant agencies is maintained to keep the project abreast of current provision and practice.

Our Parishes.

It is probably true to say that all parishes in the diocese of Hexham and Newcastle work for Justice and Peace in one way or another.  The Diocese was the first in the country to be granted
Fairtrade status by the Fairtrade Foundation.  This demonstrates the Hexham and Newcastle values both fairtrade and the Christian principles of giving a fair wage for a fair day's labour.    And the flow of practical support from the parishes to the Refugee and Asylum Seekers project is heartening.

Over the years, our parishes have engaged in campaigns with other organisations e.g. Make Poverty History, Drop the Debt, Trade Justice, Live Simply and, most recently Stop Climate Chaos.

Some parishes support the work of
Fr. Joe Plumb in Peru and several parishes raise funds for and total annual running of Good Shepherd Sisters schools for child labourers in India.

Sharing Fair Europe continues to be supported by many in the diocese.  Now part of Sharing Fair Europe, it continues to support women and young girls made vulnerable to exploitation of every kind because of the utter poverty of their lives.  While Sr. Lucina co-ordinates and supports  the work, sales are organised by individuals or groups from the parishes with willing hearts, minds and hands in some parishes.  You can contact Lucina on  lucinawogan_gs@yahoo.co.uk  or
