About Us.
Preaching the good news of authentic freedom for the poor and oppressed is at the heart of Christ's message and therefore has always been at the heart of the Church's mission. In 1966, one of Vatican 11 most important documents, Gaudium et Spes, was published and begins as follows: "The joys and the hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the people of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, are the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ." A year later, Pope Paul VI established a Commission for Justice and Peace which became a focus for a deepened commitment and new approach to questions of social justice. From this the Bishops were asked to commission people in their Diocese to address these questions and to promote an awareness of the Church's social teaching. Shortly after this, the Hexham and Newcastle Justice and Peace Coordinating Council was formed.
The members of this Council are a group of people from across the Diocese who are elected (or re-elected) at the Justice and Peace AGM each year. We come together monthly to pray, reflect and decide on ways in which we can help the parishes of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle develop as Justice Parishes. We plan and prepare an annual Justice Mass to which everyone is welcome and an annual Spirituality Day or Week-end. We produce a monthly Newsletter and campaign on such issues as: * Poverty * Fair Trade * Homelessness * Refugee and Asylum Seekers * Debt * Human Rights * the Arms Trade * HIV AIDS * the Environment * Global Warming * Prisoners * Racial Justice * Development * Conflict Resolution.
We * hold an AGM in any period not exceeding fourteen months from the previous
AGM
* disseminate information and news on all topics related to Justice and Peace
* foster contact with all bodies, locally, nationally and internationally that share
the aims of the Council, within the Catholic Church, with other Churches,
organisations and other faith communities.
* provide representation for the Diocese on such bodies that work for Justice
and Peace
* establish and maintain contact with representatives of each Deanery within
the Diocese
* respond to requests from groups, parishes and other interested bodies to
provide speakers concerning Justice and Peace topics
* promote and organise at least four events each year for the benefit of
members of the Diocese, one of which should be an AGM
* provide strategic direction and management for any paid workers or
secondees through relevant management committees.
